Evelyn Jacobs, alongside her partner Emmanuel Welcome are standing trial for the murder of an infant in South Africa.
In a report by IOL, the 7-month-old baby was continuously beaten by her mother, Evelyn, while attempting to perform deliverance on her.
In a witness testimony presented before the Barkly West Magistrate Court by the investigating officer, Constable Kgositsile Taolo, Evelyn Jacobs was informed by Mr Welcome, that her infant was possessed by demons and an exorcism needed to be performed on the child.
The duo continuously flogged the child for 2 days, in a bid to beat the demon out of the infant, but the child could not endure the torture, and was said to have died in the process.
Evelyn and Welcome is said to have killed the child on October 12, 2016.
On Wednesday, during the bail hearing, attorney to the defendant filed an application for bail on the grounds of mental instability.
Magistrate Cornelia Voster of the Barkly West Magistrate court, however denied the bail application, citing that the psychiatric report before her certified the defendant fit to stand trial, she was remanded into custody till further hearing.
