24-Year-Old Nigerian Student Drowns In Northern Cyprus




The death of a Nigerian student yesterday in northern Cyprus came as a shock to the entire Nigerian student community in the Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus,TRNC.


24-year-old Hassan Babatunde who first arrived the country as a student of  Cyprus International University, is said to have recently transferred to the Near East University, and  had just concluded the processing his registration when the unfortunate incident occurred.

The young man arrived Cyprus on a student visa, to pursue a masters degree in Management Information System, at the Cyprus International University, located in the lefkosa area of TRNC.

It was a bright sunny day, Wednesday, March 14, when the deceased and a group of friends went for a swim at the beach, according to friends, at approximately 15:30 hrs, the deceased took a dive but was over powered by the sea tide; which is not unusual at this time of the year.

When his friends noticed he had lost balance and was gasping for breath they attempted to rescue him and subsequently called for an ambulance.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead few hours later.
The Police was thereafter informed about the incident, and is said to be carrying out a preliminary investigation towards the circumstances surrounding the death of the promising young man.
