Outbreak Of Meningitis In Niger State, 4 Persons Confirmed Dead.


Niger State is experiencing an outbreak of Meningitis; a disease that affects the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, usually caused by  viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, the symptoms ranges from high fever, headache, neck stiffness, e.t.c.


4 persons have been confirmed dead in Magama area, of the North-central state.

Speaking to news men, the Commissioner for Health, Mustapha Jibril stated that 31 cases have been reported across the state, whereby 4 of them have succumb to the illness.

He explained that the areas affected by the outbreak were;  Magama, Katcha; having 4 cases, he continued that, after collecting tissue samples for examination, it was discovered that the reported 31 persons where positive to the Strain C of the meningococcal bacteria.

Jibril further stated that The State Emergency Operation Centre has been fully activated to ensure real time tracking and response to outbreak across the 25 local government areas of the state.

“Surveillance has also been intensified, including active case search across all wards in the local government areas,”he said.

The Commissioner also informed journalist that the  General Hospital, Auna, has been designated as referral health facility for treatment of cases.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding your brain and spinal cord. This often fatal, but can be prevented by immunisation.
The symptoms are often masked as malaria, since it is accompanied by high body temperature, fatigue and vomiting.
Whenever you experience symptoms  such as Fever ,Severe unrelenting headache,Confusion,Vomiting, Stiff neck, you should immediately seek medical help.
