The deceased, Alhaji Mukaila Afolabi, who is said to have a history of high blood pressure, died after having physical altercation with Oluwole.
One of the children of the victim who would like his name to remain private, narrated how the incident unfolded to Punch Metro, said'' His father died after a confrontation with Mr Oluwole over some fetish substance which was found in front of his sister's shop.
He narrated how the affair between his sister,Nasifat and Oluwole started all rosy, but barely a year into the relationship, the pair began drifting apart as a result of constant abuse melted on his sister by the suspect.
The straw that broke the camel's back, happened on Sunday when Nasifat who works as a tailor, showed up at her shop situated at Olaoluwa Street for her usual business day and found a small calabash containing substance suspected to be charms.
Nasifat immediately raised alarm, informed her brother and father about her findings, who then accused Oluwole of placing the pot of fetish substance in front of her shop.
According to the deceased son who spoke to Punch Metro, Oluwole was soon after flagged down by his father while driving through the shop and asked to remove the charm.
But the suspect sped off while Alhaji Afolabi was trying to get into his car through the front passenger door. The old man had one leg in the car and the other out while the suspect dragged him through a reasonable distance, before finally stopping the car.
''I entered a motorcycle and traced them to Jafar area where he stopped, that time, my father was already breathing heavily as a result of the danger he had exposed him to. He was hypertensive'' the child of the deceased is quoted saying.
He added that Oluwole thereafter returned to the shop alongside his father and removed the fetish concoction. ''We wanted to beat him up, but my father cautioned us. He suddenly slumped and went into a coma. We rushed him to a hospital where a doctor told us that the trouble he experienced had worsened his health condition. He did not survive it,” he said
After doctors confirmed the victim dead, the case was immediately reported to the police, and the suspect was arrest.
In an interview with Punch Metro, the suspect vehemently denied placing the charm in front of his ex-lover's shop, saying he only accepted to remove it in the interest of peace. He also denied having a hand in the death of the victim, mentioning that the confrontation had happened long before the Alhaji died.
He confirmed to have physically abused his girlfriend but claimed it was not a continuous action,it happened only once when she had publicly embarrassed him.
The suspected said he was into vehicle importation and usually brought in cars from Cotonou,Benin Republic. He met and began a relationship with the daughter of the deceased about two years ago,he had good intentions towards her and they made plans to live together. He had paid the rent and school fee of Nasifat's children.
Oluwole stated that the only recent disagreement he and Nasifat had was over intercourse and that was in December 2017. He said he was surprised when driving through his lover's shop on Sunday, he was stopped by her father who jumped into his car, drove with him to Jafar area, kept mounting pressure on him to go back to the shop and remove the concoction. Which he did, also breaking the pot of sacrifice to piece in a bid to prove his innocence.
It was while been beaten by the deceased children that the late Alhaji started panting and was rushed to the hospital.
When reporters reached out to Nasifat to get her side of the story, she said whatever was said by Oluwole were all lies. She knew him about 10years ago,he asked her out but she wasn't interested. She did not know what came over her about a year ago when she started dating him. She had tried to end the relationship when she got back to her senses.
He beats me all the time,he never paid any rent or my children's school fees, she said.
Rasheedat, a neighbour of the suspect told reporters that Oluwole was about to be arrested the previous Saturday, but the arrest was prevented by his mother. She however fled upon hearing of Afolabi's death.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Police command , ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the death of Alhaji Afolabi was not an accident but murder and that investigations were ongoing. She further stated that on the directives of the Commissioner of police, the case is to be be transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Eleweran, for further investigation and prosecution.
