Okon and his sons |
Edem Okon,53,father of two is said to have stormed the orphanage with an intent to eliminate his two children living there.
Okon had arrived at the orphanage on the pretext of taking one of his children to spend time with him, the organisation suspecting his motive, did not oblige to his request.
Sensing that the orphanage would not allow him go with any of the children,he came up with another excuse that he wants both children to accompany him to a nearby shop to make some purchase, which was also turned down.
Mr Okon is said to have gone very angry about the refusal, warning his children not to appear in his dream anymore, else he would have them killed.
According to Sam Itauma, director of the CRARN, the father whose only purpose of visiting the orphanage that day was to take the life of his children, later informed them that he had a dream, where he saw his 6-year-old son, Elijah come to stab him to death.
On searching the enraged father, they discovered he had come to the center with bread laced with poison, which he planned to feed to his sons.
He further stated that the poison was locally made from a berry called Esere or Calabar beans, which is said to be highly potent.
The Child’s Right and Rehabilitation Network used the opportunity to call on all levels of government to put more effort on the campaign against the superstition of witchcraft, citing it as a major cause of violence against seniors and vulnerable children.
