Nigerian Woman Jailed For Drug Trafficking In Rwanda

Priscilla Duru, has been sentenced by the chamber for international crimes at the High Court in Rwanda for drug trafficking.

The defendant was handed a 6-year prison sentence by the the presiding judge.

Mrs Duru was arrested at the Kigali International Airport In October 2016 while attempting to smuggle 1.3kilograms of heroin to Nigeria.

The defendant however denied all charges against her, saying she was not aware of the content of the bag, she further stated that she was only giving the bag by an unidentified Tanzanian woman to help transport to Nigeria.

Justice Alice Rulisa, presiding judge of the chamber for international crimes at the High Court, reading her verdict,  explained that the court established that the defendant was only in Rwanda to await a courier who handed her the drugs for onward delivery to Nigeria.
The court ruled that the defendant  should serve a 6-year prison term in Muhanga Prison and a two million Rwandan francs in fines.

The number of Nigerians serving sentence in international jails is on the increase.
