Aderonke Apata a foremost gay right activist has finally won a 12-year battle against the UK immigration.
Ms Apata had her asylum application previously denied by the home office and was accused of lying about her sexual orientation.She has been in a legal battle with the home office fighting for her right to remain in the UK.
Apata, Now 50 states she realised she was gay while she was a teenager.
In a country like Nigeria where being Gay was a taboo, Apata was prosecuted and later found
her way to the UK in 2004.
She did not file for asylum until 2010, when she had run ins with the immigration and was about
to be deported from the UK.Her application was denied in 2012 by the home office, citing - her grounds for applying
for refugee status on the basis of her sexuality was an attempt to thwart her being forcefully removed from the UK.
Apata continued to appeal the Home office decision to have her removed,
Two months ago, a new appeal was filed and prominent gay right campaigners Peter Tatchell and Lib Dem Peer Liz Baker was scheduled to attend the court sitting.
The Home office had the case adjourned and decided to Grant Ms Apata refugee status.
