Land Grabbing In Edo State : Don’t Be A Victim

Talk My Own (TMO) recently published the story of a community chairman and land seller, Mr Omoregbe Omoregie aka ATM machine and Princess Faith Obanamen, with the later purchasing a land from Omoregie which parts of it has already been sold to several persons.

Princess Obanamen is still waiting for Mr Omoregie to resolve the conflict, to enable her procure a Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) on the property. At the time of publishing this story, Mr Omoregbe is yet to do the needful.

The act of land grabbing is not uncommon in Edo State. Some community leaders and property owners are known for selling landed property to multiple buyers. Some buyers fearing for their lives would not call out the seller; especially if they were community chairmen, as they are usually flanked by a number of thugs.

A court is usually the last hope for a common man. But the Nigeria judicial system and specifically Edo can be very tiring. Cases could be adjourned several times, the presiding judge might not be fair. The system tends to favor the rich and elite.

The subject of Land grabbing in Edo State is not often talked about. Out of every 5 lands being bought in Edo State, 4 is surrounded by some sort of conflict .

Land sellers and grabbers in Edo State are often well connected and would always intimidate buyers to keep them quiet, if things don’t go as planned.

To save yourself from being a victim of land grabbing, especially in Edo State, be sure to visit the EDOGIS and have a Cof O issued .
