Recently there have been several reports of the Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare 11 and Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki being at loggerheads.
It is unclear why the State Governor is being confrontational with the highly reverenced traditional ruler.
However, social media speculation seems to attribute the dispute over the Benin artifacts returned by the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
The monarchy is said to have instructed that the artifacts be returned to the Oba’s Palace from where it was looted hundreds of years ago. The Governor has refused and opted that a museum be built to house the artifacts.
With the rift between the Benin monarch and the Governor still lingering, some palace functionaries went on a courtesy visit to the palace of the Ooni of Ife while promoting a youth event. The now banished palace chiefs were heard giving an erroneous version of the history of Benin Kingdom.
The show being spare headed by Mr Uwaifo and having Governor Obaseki as a special guest was utterly rejected by Edo sons and daughters.
In the same vein, two expelled palace chiefs have sued Oba Ewuare 11 to court, one being the cousin of the Oba, Prince Gregory Akenzua.
An Edo Priestess and Marine goddess, Princess Obanamen is calling on Governor Obaseki of Edo State to stop challenging the king. In a video made on her social media account, the Edo Priestess made it known that no one ever challenges the Oba.
She urged the Governor to refrain from his current actions and show loyalty to the monarch.
Princess Obanamen is one of the prominent Edo women who proudly supports and celebrates the Benin Palace.
In 2016 and 2017 respectively the princess also showed solidarity to the monarchy when she made a post in the context of the situation about İze Iyamu.
A number of Edo sons and daughters have lended their voice in connection to the situation, with some indigenes taking to the streets, chanting solidarity songs that decries the actions of Edo State Governor.
