My husband, who is not the biological father to my 10-year-old daughter, Isabel, had just moved into my house and my daughter was finding it difficult to get along with him.
Like every pre-teen would behave, Isabel had set an invisible boundary between herself and my husband. Although there was never any arguments, there wasn’t a connection either.
She didn’t love or dislike him, she just didn’t want to have anything to do with him. No matter how much he tried to get her closer to himself, she remained adamant.
Isabel is a very strong-willed, intelligent and independent girl was however polite to my husband, John.
Everything took a turn 6 months into John moving in with us, and I have returned back to work, when suddenly Isabel had her period while she was home alone with John.
Not knowing exactly what to do, John hurried to the store nearby to get some sanitary towels, while constantly on the phone with me asking for guidance on how to go about the situation.
He kept comforting Isabel, assuring her he was there for her and would always be.
He handed her the sanitary towel, made her feel safe and comfortable.
The situation was a groundbreaking point in the relationship between them. Isabel began to see John as a daddy, and not just a housemate; as she once saw him.
Her perception of him changed. They grew closer each day and still getting closer.
I am happy and feel fulfilled now that my blended family is in a good place.
My story should teach everyone that through empathy, kindness and compassion for each other, a family thrives.
