Rickets also called osteomalacia are a condition caused by softening and weakening of the bones in children, usually as a result of inadequate Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus.
A prolonged deficiency of Vitamin D causes the body to
maintain inadequate level of calcium and phosphorus in the bones and this leads to rickets.
Rickets require medical diagnosis and the symptoms ranges from bow legs, stunted growth, weakness in the pelvic region, spines and bones. It is often treated in its early stages through calcium rich diets, supplements, medications and sometimes surgery.
